The Medicine Man- RG Spring ‘18
We wanted to design a set of highly-festival-friendly Hawaiian shirts for spring ‘17. The ‘Medicine Man’ pattern is composed of history’s finest herbal remedies and mind altering substances. I wanted them to be subtle, and loosely rendered. Tobacco leaf, tobacco flowers, peyote, psilocybin mushrooms, coca leaf, salvia, Ayahuasca, and some good ‘ol cannabis. I had to draw the line at poppy flowers, poppy has always been used as an herbal remedy and as a graphic element poppy flowers would have been a lovely addition to the composition but the opioid crisis is not cool, and i wanted this shirt to be cool.
Star Spangled Banners- RG 2015
One of my early best-sellers at RG. This pattern was first offered on a Hawaiian, but a couple seasons later we made swim trunks. I used a 3D modeling program called Cinema 4D to create the different flag shapes by creating a cloth simulation and texturing. I enjoy a chance to get out of the Adobe Creative Cloud and into a 3d environment.
Fire Dancers- RG Spring ‘19
I got the idea for this pattern while watching some fire dancers at 3 a.m. at Cherry Cola Dog. The movement and rhythm of fire dancing is totally mesmerizing. This pattern is composed of 8 different dancers. We decided to make one ‘easter egg’ dancer, she is farting on her torch and blowing a massive fire bomb…
#vacation- RG Spring ‘19
The inspiration for this pattern came from a viral video on reddit of this girl at a resort taking a selfie. she spent a long time and contorted her body into all different shapes trying to capture the perfect shot. So I thought it would be funny to make a pin-up style pattern where all the pinups are taking selfies and looking at their phones instead of relaxing on the beach and soaking in the scenery.
Tropical Disturbances
I came up with this concept on the last day before the deadline for submitting prototype designs for RG Spring ‘18. Graphically speaking- hurricane radar imagery looks cool. its organic and colorful and i’d never seen anything like it. The first time we produced this pattern it was on swim trunks. They are still my favorites, and I still get comments on them all the time. About a week after we got the prototypes hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, it was not funny or cool and we almost pulled the design from the collection because we didn’t want to offend anyone. I have a friend who works for FEMA. she got a pair of trunks for her boss and she said he thought they were awesome too.
